Skins is a British teenage drama that follows the lives of a group of teenagers in Bristol, through the two years of sixth form. Its controversial storylines have looked at issues such as dysfunctional families, mental illness (such as eating disorders), adolescent sexuality, substance abuse and death.
The show also looks at different friendship groups and relationships.
The show has split critics, some saying that the show is a very inaccurate blown up version of teenage life. Whilst others have said it’s the most accurate teen drama to have been made by “showing the cold truth”.
Film Noir
Film noir is the term that is given to a genre of popular film between 1940s – 1960s made in America.
That point in time was the turbulent wartime decade of the 1940s – a decade in which Americans experienced contradictory feelings of great success and optimism mixed with new and unsettling changes at home and abroad.
After World War II ended, American films that had been made during the war years began to make their way to Europe. A small, but influential group of French critics – perhaps because they saw the films with a fresh eye and almost as a unit – recognized a new darkness in mood, style, and theme that hadn't been present in films made before the war.
The content of noir films keeps pace with the settings. Most noir stories feature main characters who find themselves embroiled in hopeless situations, fighting against a force that threatens to overtake them, the force being their inablility to resist temptation. Most often this main character is male, although there are some noir movies in which the main character is female.
Characteristics of Film Noir
In addition to unsettling narrative themes of ambiguity and violent death, certain stylistic characteristics immediately come to mind when discussing film noir.
General plots included:

The isolated feel of modern cities.

Conflicted anti-heroes and terse dialogue.

Determined, beautiful, scheming women.
This style of film has created a totally unique genre of film that people still love to watch today.
Many film noir characteristics were the result of an interaction between filmmakers, new filmmaking techniques, and a tension and uncertainty that lay underneath the patriotism and optimism of the 1940s after the great depression of the 1930s
